"Special" nuts
In Greece we import them mainly from South Africa and they are considered one of the most "special" nuts, due to their mild, creamy and delicate taste. They are eaten plain, and are often used in cooking, salads and confectionery. Macadamia nuts are considered to be of high nutritional value as they were found to contain many trace elements, such as magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, copper, etc. as well as tocopherols, phytosterols and squalene. It is important that they contain a large amount of monounsaturated fatty acids (75% of their weight are fatty acids, of which 80% are monounsaturated, mainly palmitoleic acid), which give them their special texture.
Recent research has shown
That their consumption significantly improves the lipid profile of people who consume them, reducing the values of both total cholesterol and the so-called "bad" cholesterol (LDL) in the blood. No significant changes were observed in human serum triglyceride levels. There is also a decrease in Body Mass Index (BMI) in people who ate macadamia nuts, as well as a decrease in inflammatory markers (leukotrienes, LTB-4) and oxidative stress (8-isoprostane).
